This is one of the last True Tones made, with its serial number dating it to 1930. Like the Martin brothers he had worked for colonel Conn for a time.

Gus Buescher set up his company in the late 19th century in Elkhart, Indiana. I’ve played this once so far – it has the loudest, fullest sound of all the tenors I own. I’ve owned a ‘naked lady’ alto for a number of years and jumped at the chance of buying a great big sounding tenor from one of the key American saxophone makers. It is always important to get a structurally clean vintage horn if you can, and this is definitely one. This is a recent acquisition. The bottom line is that for the price of a cheaply-made, student sax, you are getting a vintage, very well made, professional saxophone in original condition. I would be happy to talk more about any of these options with you. You could conceivably play it for a little while as is before repadding, or if you are on a tight budget, pop in your own set of “snap in” pads and get by, or you could get it fully overhauled by a pro. This horn actually plays surprisingly well considering it has old, original pads. The neck brace also popped slightly off and been resoldered, which is very common on these tenors.

In terms of past damage, this horn has a few shallow dents (back of the bow area and one on the neck), and the low C/Eb post is slightly pushed in. They work great for a wide range of playing situations. These horns all have a big, balanced tone that is medium between bright and dark, and excellent intonation. This is a professional horn made in the USA that is basically identical to the more expensive “Top Hat and Cane” tenors, but which has simpler engraving. It has original lacquer, original pads, springs, snaps, and a cool original case. This is a nice, clean, original Buescher Super 400 tenor saxophone.
